What Happens to Your Story After 24 Hours

A story disappearing from your tray after 24 hours is not the same as it disappearing for good. Here is where it actually goes, who can still see it, and for how long.

Stories feel disposable by design — that's most of their appeal. But "disposable" and "gone forever" aren't the same thing, and we think it's worth being specific about what actually happens on each side of that 24-hour mark.

The first 24 hours

From the moment you post, your story is live for 24 hours and shows up as a ring around your avatar for anyone your story audience allows — a setting you control from Settings → Privacy. While it's live, people can view it, react to it, and reply, and you can see who did from your own story tray.

Hiding it from specific people

In plain words Your story audience setting controls the general rule. On top of that, you can quietly exclude specific people without unfollowing or blocking them.

Under Settings → Story, the Hide story tab lets you search for anyone and keep your story from them specifically — useful when your story is otherwise open to followers, but there are one or two people you'd rather not see it. It's a quiet exclusion: the person isn't told they've been hidden from, and nothing about your relationship with them changes anywhere else in the app.

The same panel has a separate Muted tab, which works the other way — it stops specific people's stories from showing up in your tray, without unfollowing or blocking them either.

What happens when the 24 hours are up

Once a story expires, it disappears from the main story tray — nobody still sees a ring around your avatar for it. It doesn't just vanish, though: it moves into your private Story Archive, found under your profile menu, grouped by month.

The archive page says exactly who it's for, because it's worth being direct about: only you can see it. Nobody else — not your followers, not people who viewed the story while it was live — can browse your archive.

What's still attached to an archived story

Expiry doesn't erase the activity a story picked up while it was live. In your archive, you can still open an old story and see who viewed it, who reacted, and any replies it got, the same way you could in the first 24 hours. The archive is a record, not just a photo dump.

How long it stays there

By default, expired stories are kept in your archive for a year before they're removed for good. There's no auto-generated "best of" reel or highlight compilation built from your archive today — it's a plain, chronological, month-by-month list that only you can scroll through.

The bottom line

24 hours is how long a story stays public. It isn't how long it exists. If you want to find a story you posted three weeks ago, re-read a reply, or just see how many people watched it, your archive is where it's been the whole time.
